RPGeo E-Forum: Coal. Why are we still using inverse distance weighting?

A recent review of JORC reports submitted by ASX listed companies over the past five years revealed that inverse distance weighting (IDW) remains the most popular method for modelling coal quality properties.

This practice continues despite numerous academic papers and guidelines promoting the use of geostatistical methods as the preferred method. Unfortunately, almost all JORC reports fail to give robust reasoning for the continued use of IDW. This RPGeo forum will discuss this topic with numerous coal resource estimation geologist to get their thoughts on why we are still using IDW.

Kane Maxwell (Matrix Geoscience), Emma Ewart (Peabody Energy), Iain Miller (Xenith), Noel Pranoto (BHP) & more to come.
