NewH2 Knowledge Exchange
Head along to NewH2’s last Knowledge Exchange for 2022, followed up with a networking session celebrating the changes of 2022 and the start of the emerging hydrogen economy. This Knowledge Exchange will be an afternoon session held at the Green Room.
Hear from Hunter Water around projected water needs of the hydrogen sector, and the Port of Newcastle’s plans to establishing a dedicated Clean Energy Precinct with common-use and shared infrastructure to accelerate clean energy industry development and unlock export markets.
We often hear the ratio of 9:1 of water to hydrogen in establishing a hydrogen economy, that is 9 kg water for the production of every kilogram of hydrogen. But this theoretical minimum relates to pure water only. What is likely to be the real estimate of water required in a maturing hydrogen economy accounting for the whole life cycle of hydrogen capture to transport to usage?
Come and hear what Hunter Water has explored in it’s nascent exploration into the world of hydrogen, and a future hydrogen economy’s competition with existing needs in water security. There is a growing need for attending to the needs of this competition for water, and we welcome Hunter Water to sharing what has been learned to date and what is needed to be done to assure planning and investment requirements are met.
Speaker :: Tony McClymont Manager Sustainable Growth at Hunter Water Corporation
Tony has over 20 years of experience in the water industry, working in operational, planning, and strategic roles. His current strategic planning role aims to deliver an integrated water management approach that engages with community and stakeholders, and delivers positive outcomes for water resilience, wastewater management and liveability. In recent years this has included the development of recycled water portfolios for drought and long-term water security planning in the Lower Hunter.
The hydrogen industry is a developing opportunity that Tony has been leading Hunter Water on for almost 18 months. Tony believes that the Hunter has a diverse set of sustainable water supply options that can support our region in its aspirations to be a leader in this emerging industry.

Port of Newcastle is establishing a dedicated Clean Energy Precinct with common-use and shared infrastructure to accelerate clean energy industry development and unlock export markets. Hear from the Port of Newcastle on its plans to activate its 220 hectare site that will:
- Enable clean energy now
- Help to drive the cost of green electricity down
- Enable adjacent investment
- Green electricity demand to underpin Hunter Renewable Energy Zone and Offshore Wind; and
- Enable decarbonisation of Australian industry
- Harness opportunities for land use expansion for clean energy production storage and associated green manufacture
- Create new jobs for existing workforce: around 5,800 new jobs for the Hunter’s highly skilled industrial workforce.
Hear from:
Wendy West - Senior Manager Engineering, Energy Team, Port of Newcastle
Justine Ulph - Clean Energy Manager, Energy Team, Port of Newcastle
