Coal mining ceased at Idemitsu’s Muswellbrook site in in late 2022. Leading up to the closure, mine rehabilitation activities commenced as did thinking and assessment about the land use opportunities for the site into the future. Located close to the township of Muswellbrook, the site lends itself to the opportunity to transition to a clean industries precinct. Over the past few years, planning applications and project development activities have been progressing on two major projects being the Muswellbrook Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Project and the Muswellbrook Solar Farm.
The re-use of former mine and power stations lands is an important strategic consideration for the region.
