Generic Underground Mine Induction
This course introduces you to the underground coal mining industry where you will gain the skills and knowledge to work as an underground coal mine worker in NSW and Qld.
Who should attend?
Individuals wishing to work in a NSW or Qld underground coal mine.
What you will learn
You will gain skills and knowledge in:
- Firefighting techniques
- Underground communication devices
- Self-escape equipment and self-escape systems to evacuate the mining environment*
- Isolation techniques
- Reading mine plans
- Industry-specific risk management tools
- Basic first aid skills
You will also experience an underground mining environment using fully immersive virtual reality technologies and our purpose-built underground training gallery.
*This course includes training in the operation of self-rescuers and breathing apparatus, including simulator oxygen generating self-contained self-rescuers to comply with Section 103 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022 (NSW).
This course also covers the requirements of Qld Standard 11 and the Underground Coal Mine Safety Skill Set (RIISS00033).
Credential issued
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the following units:

- RIIERR203E Escape from hazardous situations unaided
- RIIERR205D Apply initial response First Aid
- RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents
- RIIGOV201E Comply with site work processes/procedures
- RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control
- RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
If you are completing this course at the Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Western or Moolarben Mines Rescue stations, you will also receive an industry Self-Escape Card. This card may be required for site access.
Alternative pathways are available if you complete the course at the Southern Mines Rescue station and think you will need a Self-Escape Card. Please enquire at the time of booking.
Course delivery
This course is delivered through classroom-based training, desktop scenarios, virtual reality and practical exercises.
Assessment includes written, oral and practical tests.

Entry requirements
- There are no formal pre-requisites for this course
- This course is based on a Certificate II level qualification. You should have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.
- Mines Rescue recommends you be aware of the policies and procedures of your workplace before starting the course.
