New Federal Resources Minister appointed to Cabinet after Canavan steps down
Federal Member for Hinkler in Queensland takes over vacated portfolio
Media statement from Keith Pitt on appointment to Cabinet:
"Today I have been appointed by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to the Cabinet as Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia.
I am deeply honoured and it is a great privilege to join the ministry.
Since my election in 2013, I have held ministerial positions in previous parliaments, firstly as Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister in the Agriculture portfolio, Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, and then Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister working in the Infrastructure portfolio.
Before entering politics I was a tradesman, an engineer, a small business owner and a farmer, and I want to bring that practical, common sense experience to the portfolio.
The resources sector in Australia is a dynamic industry with great opportunity to further develop and drive our nation forward and I look forward to the challenges this presents.
I also look forward to making sure Australia’s scarce water resources are well managed.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the former Minister for the work he has done in representing the resources sector and Northern Australia.
I have been humbled by the support shown to me from my electorate of Hinkler, in which I was born and raised, and further afield. I will work tirelessly for my constituents and the Australian people."
