Local engineering leaders recognised at 2024 Newcastle Excellence Awards
The 2024 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – People and Projects Newcastle celebrated the region's most innovative engineers and engineering projects last night.
Held at Merewether Surfhouse, the Engineers Australia awards event recognised outstanding achievements in various categories, with local winners advancing to the national awards in Brisbane later this year.
Ampcontrol, in collaboration with Steber International and the University of Newcastle, took home the Newcastle Project of the Year award for their work on a Hybrid Power and Propulsion System for Maritime Vessels. The team designed and built a 600kW hybrid system for a 43-foot boat, which aims to reduce carbon emissions in maritime transport. The project sets a high standard for sustainability in the sector, contributing to the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Its potential scalability offers both local and international applications.
Amanda Kerr from AECOM was named Newcastle Professional Engineer of the Year for her leadership as the Area Manager for the Hunter Region. Leading over 100 engineers and scientists, Amanda has overseen key projects with a focus on sustainability and safety. Her work in AECOM’s Sustainable Legacies strategy, combined with her dedication to diversity and inclusion, earned her recognition for her contributions to the profession.
The award for Newcastle Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year went to Cameron Denecker of Aurecon. Cameron’s achievements include managing a $90 million program for the Department of Defence and leading a modular bridge system project that reduces risks and costs in construction. His commitment to mentoring graduates and Indigenous students reflects his advocacy for inclusivity and sustainability in engineering.
Helen Link, General Manager of Engineers Australia Newcastle, noted, “By recognising these contributions, we not only elevate their work but also lay the groundwork for the next generation to continue this legacy.”
Winners from the night will go on to represent Newcastle at the national gala event in Brisbane, set for November 21.
