Hunter Transmission Project offers new opportunities for local businesses

The Hunter Transmission Project (HTP) is opening doors for Hunter region businesses to contribute to NSW’s clean energy future, after industry briefings attract strong local interest.

EnergyCo's Hunter Transmission Project is set to play a crucial role in securing energy supply as NSW transitions away from coal-fired power. The project involves constructing a 500 kilovolt (kV) overhead transmission line, stretching approximately 100 kilometres between Bayswater and Olney.

This new infrastructure will link the state’s existing 500 kV network, creating a central backbone for the electricity grid, and enabling power generated from renewable energy zones in Central-West Orana and New England to reach major consumption areas in the Hunter, Sydney, and Illawarra.

The project is still in the planning phase, with construction slated to begin in 2026. EnergyCo is now inviting expressions of interest (EOIs) from local businesses, particularly those in the Hunter region, to participate in various stages of the project.

The procurement process will appoint two main contractors to manage the design and construction of the transmission line and the new switching stations to be built in Bayswater and Olney. Local suppliers will play a key role in delivering services for this State-significant infrastructure project.

To support this local involvement, EnergyCo held a series of industry briefings in August 2024 in Singleton, Cessnock, Toronto, and Newcastle. These sessions attracted over 150 attendees from a wide range of businesses eager to learn about procurement processes, project timelines, and opportunities for involvement. The events resulted in more than 50 expressions of interest from local businesses.

EnergyCo is encouraging further participation from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region, with a particular focus on creating jobs and supporting the local economy.

Businesses interested in submitting an EOI need to register via the ICN Gateway, an online platform for managing contractor participation. Those who attended the briefings were provided guidance on how to complete their profiles and ensure they present their capabilities effectively for consideration in the procurement process. Local SMEs are encouraged to register for partial scope involvement, while larger organisations capable of managing the project as a head contractor can opt for full scope registration.

The Hunter Transmission Project is expected to be operational by 2028, marking an important step towards NSW's renewable energy goals. By involving local suppliers and investing in regional businesses, the project aims to foster economic growth and create lasting opportunities for the Hunter region.

For more information on the HTP or to submit an EOI, businesses can visit the EnergyCo website or register their interest on the ICN Gateway platform.
