Consultation open on draft model code for managing fatigue risks at work

The Safe Work Australia consultation provides an important opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to shaping workplace fatigue management and ensure safer, healthier work environments across Australia.

Safe Work Australia has opened a public consultation on a draft model Code of Practice focused on managing fatigue risks at work. The code is designed to assist persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) in understanding what is considered reasonably practicable to manage fatigue hazards and ensure the guidance is applicable across various industries.

The draft was developed with input from Safe Work Australia members and other safety regulators. Now, Safe Work Australia is seeking feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including employers, workers, unions, legal professionals, researchers, and members of the public, to help refine and improve the code.

Feedback gathered will be used to revise the draft model Code, which will then be presented to Safe Work Australia members for approval. If endorsed, it will be submitted to Commonwealth, state, and territory WHS ministers for final approval, with a decision expected in the first half of 2025. Once approved by jurisdictional WHS ministers, the model Code will become an official code of practice in those areas.

Feedback contributors can choose whether their submission is published publicly, anonymously, or not at all. If submissions cannot be lodged online, stakeholders can send their feedback via email to psychosocialpolicy@swa.gov.au.

Participants are encouraged to support their responses with evidence or data. The consultation period closes at 11:59 pm on 27 November 2024.

Submissions can be made via the Safe Work Australia’s Consultation Hub here.
