Australia unveils National Battery Strategy to lead global battery production by 2035
The Federal Government's new National Battery Strategy aims to transform the country into a leader in battery production, boosting domestic manufacturing, addressing workforce demands, and leveraging Australia's expertise and resources in clean energy technology.
The Australian Government has unveiled its National Battery Strategy, in an attempt to boost both domestic and export battery production by 2035. This initiative is the first under the Future Made in Australia Act.
The strategy emphasizes a shift from exporting raw minerals to adding value through advanced manufacturing. To address workforce demands, it includes initiatives like the Powering Australia Industry Growth Centre and the Building Women’s Careers Program.
In support of the strategy, the government announced several funding measures:
+ $523.2 million for the Battery Breakthrough Initiative to enhance manufacturing capabilities.
+ $20.3 million for Building Future Battery Capabilities to support research, innovation, and industry standards.
+ $1.7 billion for the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund to drive technology development and commercialization.
The strategy aims to leverage Australia's expertise in battery technology and its supply of critical minerals to strengthen battery supply chains. It outlines key opportunities in stationary storage, battery active materials, grid-connected batteries, and batteries for transport manufacturing.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese explained the broader vision: “We want to make more things here and with global demand for batteries set to quadruple by 2030, Australia must be a player in this field.”
Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic emphasised the economic benefits, noting that a strong battery industry can create well-paid, secure jobs and support the transition to net zero emissions.
This strategy is designed to help Australia transition from a resource-exporting economy to a leader in clean energy technology manufacturing, fostering collaboration with international partners and bolstering economic resilience.
