New ARC Centre of Excellence launches with focus on Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals
Zero-emission mining the agenda for Newcastle based centre
The recently awarded $35 million ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals has launched their new website.
The green economy, digital revolution, improved health and living standards all depend on metals supplied at a minimal environmental cost. However, the declining grade of the more accessible minerals, increasing complexity of mineralogy, and the growing need to extract the minerals from deeper mines, have reached a tipping point, making current practices technologically, economically, and environmentally unsustainable.
To be based at Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources and led by UON researcher Laureate Professor Kevin Galvin, the Centre will work towards achieving zero-emission mining by doubling energy and water productivity, and reducing the loss of high value metals during processing by up to 90 per cent.
